Enhancing STEM persistence and success with research on emerging technologies.

Directed by Dr. Shelbi Kuhlmann

Our Mission & Goals

The KuhlMedia & Mind Lab is mutually housed in the Psychology Department and Institute for Intelligent Systems at the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN, United States.

We research learning in multimedia environments, which have become ubiquitous for STEM learning but often challenge students because they contain an abundance of complex and abstract visual representations. These visual representations require students to translate their meaning and integrate that meaning with verbal information. By designing emerging technologies according to the cognitive science of learning, we can help students navigate the complexity of multimedia environments in a way that supports their motivation and cognition, thus enhancing their STEM success.

CogniVideo

CogniVideo is an AI-enabled video hosting software that uses real time data from learners’ engagement with videos to offer scaffolds for facilitating their self-regulated learning. CogniVideo is currently under development and we are collecting data on (1) students’ self-regulated learning behaviors when watching videos and (2) adapting embedded practice questions to learners’ prior knowledge. To learn more about these studies, please see our ‘Learn about our Projects’ page and use the button below to access the in-development software site.

Psychonomic Society Blog Post

Learning from instructional videos is a nearly everyday occurrence for learners of all ages, across both formal and informal environments. In addition to their popularity, videos can be a powerful medium to support learning; however, our ability to adequately learn from videos is largely reliant on how they are designed to support learning and how we self-regulate our learning while watching videos. Before searching for your next video to either use in a course that you are teaching or learn how to cook a new recipe, read our article in the Psychonomic Society for advice on searching for, incorporating, and learning from videos.

Haley Siegfried Featured in the UofM News

Doctoral student, Haley Siegfried (BA in Psychology from The University of Memphis), was recently featured in the UofM news! Haley joined the KuhlMedia and Mind lab as a doctoral student in the Fall 2024 semester and is pursuing her PhD in Experimental Psychology with a focus in cognition. Haley is a graduate student in the Psychology Department and Institute for Intelligent Systems. Haley is interested in self-regulated learning and motivation during training, and is looking forward to expanding her knowledge of research methods and measurement techniques in graduate school. Haley recently presented work on STEM majors’ expectancies and values at the MidSouth Psychology Conference in Memphis, TN. Check out more information about that project on our “Travel With Us” page and read more about Haley’s feature by pressing the button below.
