The KuhlMedia & Mind Lab Team

Dr. Shelbi Kuhlmann

Dr. Kuhlmann directs the KuhlMedia and Mind lab. She received her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Central Florida, M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia, and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Applied Cognition and Development from the University of Georgia. Dr. Kuhlmann is an Assistant Professor of Cognitive Psychology with a joint position in Psychology and the Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) at the University of Memphis. In her research, she seeks to understand the cognitive, metacognitive, and motivational processes involved in learning complex STEM information. For example, she explores how students learn from generative strategies and well-designed multimedia technologies. She uses various methods and data streams to conduct her research, including controlled lab experiments and authentic quasi-experimental classroom studies, as well as learning analytic methods with click stream data.

Noelle Patterson

Noelle received her B.S. in Psychology from Mississippi State University and is a Master’s of General Psychology student in the Psychology Department and Institute for Intelligent Systems at the University of Memphis. Noelle graduates with her M.S.G.P. in Spring 2025 and is a 2nd year graduate student in the KuhlMedia & Mind Lab. Noelle also works with Dr. Nick Simon at UofM Psychology in the Behavioral Neuroscience area. Within the Simon Lab, Noelle works with rodent models to understand risky decision making. In the Spring 2025, she will be running her own study to complete her Master’s Thesis. In this study, she will investigate the measurement and role of cognitive load during mathematics problem-solving with worked examples.

Haley Siegfried

Haley received her B.A. in Psychology from The University of Memphis and is a Doctoral student in Experimental Psychology in the Psychology Department and Institute for Intelligent Systems at the University of Memphis. Haley is a 2nd year student in the KuhlMedia & Mind Lab and a 1st year graduate student in the lab. She developed a strong interest in cognitive psychology working in the KuhlMedia & Mind Lab as an undergraduate researcher. During that time, she did a study on undergraduate STEM majors' expectancies and values predicting their academic success in introductory courses. This study led her to her graduate studies where she is interested in researching how interconnected concepts like motivation, memory processes, self-regulation, and learning strategies can contribute to achievement.
